Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) scheme
WELS is Australia's water efficiency labeling scheme, and all Britex products that use water are required by law to be registered and display a WELS star rating. The more stars, the more water efficient the product.
If you are involved in supplying or installing regulated products in a new building or renovation, you must meet the same requirements as retailers selling products to consumers.
Regulated products include:
- showers
- taps (excluding over a bath)
- flow controllers
- toilets
- urinals
- dishwashers
- washing machines
- combination washer-dryers

What is a WaterMark certificate?
Watermark is an accreditation scheme managed by the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) that shows compliance with the plumbing code of Australia. At Britex, all of our products comply with this standard.
If a product is listed on the Schedule of Products and is to be installed in Australia, including those purchased via online stores, the product must be:
- WaterMark certified
- marked with the WaterMark trademark, WaterMark licence number and the applicable product specification
- listed on the WaterMark product database
- provided with a Scope of Use statement, specifying its intended use
Any associated product packaging and promotional material must also be marked with the WaterMark trademark and licence number.
The WaterMark Certification Scheme is a mandatory scheme for plumbing and drainage products of a certain type.
If the product type is listed on the Schedule of Products but is not WaterMark certified, a licensed plumber is not permitted to install it.
